Scott Johnston has more than 20 years of experience communicating complex ideas, services, and processes effectively in senior business writing positions. Today, Scott facilitates the JTG programs that enable professional services firms to differentiate themselves and win more work.
“Scott’s coaching was instrumental in securing a key project for our company. He arrived at our coaching sessions well organized and did a great job keeping us focused. During the interview preparation he helped us to identify and articulate the main points and edit out the “noise” that had the potential to dilute the message. Some members of our team had little or no interview experience. Scott’s training helped them manage their nerves so they were confident in delivering their remarks.”
–Jeremy Carroll, VP Construction, Pacific Northwest | Dawson Construction
Selection Panel Research
JTG has interviewed more than 120 selection panel members in the last 10 years. Scott leads the JTG Selection Panel Research and has conducted in-person interviews with panel members from numerous public and private organizations. By speaking directly to panel members, Scott gains a unique understanding of what they want—and need—to see in proposals and interviews. JTG applies the insights learned to help teams perform at the highest level when they compete for new projects.

Strategic Writing Program
Scott designed the JTG Strategic Writing program for technical professionals to enable them to understand and write to address their clients’ concerns—quickly and efficiently. In the program, architects, engineers, contractors, and others learn and practice the skills they need to:
- Write results-oriented stories and incorporate benefits through testimonials.
- Use a balance of emotion and data to support recommendations.
- Solve their specific writing challenges, such as writer’s block, overuse of passive voice, or redundant content.
- Differentiate themselves by conveying how they do their jobs, not merely that they do their jobs.
Like all JTG programs, Strategic Writing uses highly interactive group learning sessions. Participants assess and improve real examples, share feedback with others, and together build best practices that can be utilized after the program has ended.
Effective business writing
As a senior business writer in positions at F5 Networks, Slalom Consulting, Microsoft, and several advertising agencies, Scott led strategy and message development, built C-level executive presentations for global events, and designed and facilitated business writing training. At Slalom, Scott built and taught “The Five Tenets of Great Business Writing” program. This training so effectively improved how the firm’s consultants and leaders communicated with clients that they asked Scott to “train their trainers” in 14 other Slalom offices.
